Uttar Pradesh police detained on Thursday AAP MP Sanjay Singh in Varanasi while he was on his way to join ‘Tiranga Sankalp Yatra’, organized by the state unit of his party.

According to a notice issued by the Manduadih police station in charge on Wednesday, local administration had declared the AAP’s programme as “illegal” as the Varanasi Commissionerate had not given its approval to it.

“Its British rule in Uttar Pradesh. Look at the language of the notice (issued by the Manduadih police station in charge). Adityanath administration as declared ‘Tiranga Yatra’ illegal. Murder is not a crime in Yogi regime. Taking out a ‘Tiranga Yatra’ is a crime,” Singh said tweeting in Hindi sharing the police notice on the micro-blogging site.

Singh claimed that the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh under chief minister Yogi Adityanath is giving permission to political events of Congress but refusing to allow AAP organising its programmes in the state.

Reacting to the police action, Delhi chief minister and national convenor of the AAP Arvind Kejriwal also asked how it can be a crime to take out a ‘Tiranga Yatra’ in the country.

“How can it be a crime to take out a ‘Tiranga Yatra’ in our own country? Why should one hoisting the Tri-colour be arrested? What kind of law is this?” Kejriwal tweeted.

AAP is gearing up to contest all 403 seats in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections early next year.

“Our party is stronger than the Congress in the state. While the Congress won 40 seats in panchayat polls, we scored a victory in 83panchayats. AAP got over 40 lakh votes in these polls, where 1600 party candidates contested,” Singh, who is in-charge of the APP’s political affairs in Uttar Pradesh, had told India’s premier news agency PTI in an interview last month.
